I bought this after the RAID utility in a comparable Buffalo box wouldn't switch to RAID 1. No problem with this drive, as you do it through a mechanical switch on the back of the box. The other "nice" thing about this SimpleTech box is that the only printed instructions were printed directly on the inside flap of the box! In connecting it up to a USB port, I saw that the drive was already configured NTFS RAID 0, with documentation files on the drive itself. Bring up the startup program and you're presented with a menu of documents, all of which are on the Web. Brought up the one with instructions on how to switch to RAID 1 and followed the instructions.

The software included on the drive doesn't touch the drive at all. All it does is provide instructions on how to get Windows to initialize the drive! That actually kind of gives my heart warm fuzzies. The only "software" from SimpleTech that physically accesses the drive is the RAID firmware built into the drive hardware... Read more

Piece of junk. I don't normally write reviews, but I wish someone would have warned me about this thing. I wouldn't take another one for free. All it did was cost me money, time and lot of data that was important to me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid this drive at all cost, February 1, 2011
This review is from: SimpleTech 2TB SimpleDrive Pro Duo USB 2.0/eSata External Drive (FP-UFE2/2TB) (Personal Computers)
I bought the 4 TB version of this Hitachi drive from Fry's. It failed the second day I used it. My computer (running Vista Ultimate 32 bit) would not recognize it. I contacted Hitachi Tech Support and was told to return the drive. I exchanged it for another one (by the way, both were brand new). I used the second drive for 2 weeks, then my computer suddendly cannot see any data. I contacted Hitachi Tech Support and was told that the partition table was corrupted. Fry's would not take this drive back because the model was now discontinued and out of stock. To have two drives fail within one month and lose data twice was simply unacceptable. Hitachi Tech kept on boasting on how reliable their drives are to me when I talked to them!!

Hitachi now will send me a refurbished G-RAID drive (from another division of their company). I'll post my experience with this Hitachi drive once I have used it.

Glyph Technologies GT062E 2TB Dual RAID and Spanning Hard Drive Array with FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and eSATA Interfaces

Product Description

Glyph Technologies started with the best of the original GT 062, including multiple drive modes selectable with the Glyph Manager software utility and added an eSATA port for blazing fast performance. The GT 062E uses the next generation Oxford 936 chip and hits over 200MB/s sustained throughput over eSATA in RAID 0 mode. That kind of speed is perfect for any production environment. The GT 062E has became a standard in production workflows. With capacities up to 4TB, the GT 062E includes an eSATA port, which enables over 200MB/s sustained transfer rate in RAID 0 mode.Connected by FireWire 800 or USB 2.0, the GT 062E reports the health of the two internal drives using Glyph Manager software. With dual SATA drives under the hood and fault-tolerant RAID modes, there's plenty of speed and reliability for your production applications.

  • RAID 1: offers data redundancy and real-time backup by writing the same data to the two hard drives at the same time. Should a drive failure happen, data is still available on the remaining drive
  • RAID 0: (striping) increases the performance of the drive system by spreading the data across two drives. RAID 0 is a proven technology for editing video, working with huge graphics files, sound libraries and streaming instruments that play hundreds of samples simultaneously
  • Spanning mode simply shows the two internal drives as one large volume
  • A cool drive is a healthy drive: The GT 062E uses a quiet internal fan for maximum airflow and proper cooling. The case is designed with front-panel ventilation holes to draw cool air in, while exhausting warm air out the back - critical to the performance and reliability of the components
  • Nobody likes wall-warts: They are easily misplaced, or accidentally unplugged from the drive and take up valuable outlet space. The GT 062E uses an industry-standard power cord and pro-quality internal power supply for the most efficient and reliable power source possible

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best RAID Array I have found!!!, September 28, 2009

This review is from: LaCie 301357U 2TB 4big Quadra eSATA/FireWire 800/Firewire 400/USB 2.0 RAID Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
This is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. I previously had two 1TB drives running in a software RAID 1. I then needed more space and the cost of changing the ARRY to a 2TB software Raid 1 was too expensive. Instead I first purchased a Qx2 from OWC which was the WORST device I have ever owned. It constantly went into rebuild mode, was very loud, and the fan alarm went off once a week in the middle of the night waking me up. STAY AWAY FROM the Qx2. I then did some research and found out about the 4big. I couldn't find too much info on it but decided anything was better then the junk I had. I connected the 4big and was running in a matter of minutes. IT IS AMAZING. It runs super quiet, I MEAN ALMOST SILENT. It is not constantly spinning the hard drives down and then having to spin them up. It also has a an AUTO mode for low power (which is almost no power) when the computer is off or sleeping. It is more compact and much better looking. I now am running four 1TB drives... Read more

This review is from: LaCie 301357U 2TB 4big Quadra eSATA/FireWire 800/Firewire 400/USB 2.0 RAID Hard Drive (Personal Computers)
I purchased this in 2009 as a RAID system, but I ended up using it as a back up drive. I had intended to use it more heavily, just never got around to using it. Anyways, backed up data on it, and 1.5 years later one of the internal drives is "clicking" dead.
Unbelievable, as this unit was basically turned OFF, unless I was backing up data on it. I think I turned it on a total of 10 times!

I think the enclosure is ok, but for LaCie to ship CRAP drives in the system is ridiculous.

From LaCie support directly:
"Thanks for providing the additional information.
We do not test or certify this model of unit to work with drives of any other capacity than those they ship with originally.
While it is possible that this might work, there may be problems recognizing larger drives in the unit. Also, depending on the RAID mode, it's possible that replacement drives, even if recognized, might only enumerate up to the capacity of the original... Read more
